The 3 dissimilar writers I chose were absolutely unknown to me before now. I picked Alma Guillermoprieto, Elizabeth Mitchell, and Jane Mayer. Initially, I found Elizabeth, read her excerpt, and because I liked her, I used her as my standard and looked for writers who weren't similar. The excerpt I read from her - Lady with a Past - was creatively done, suspending reality for a moment without telling the reader what exactly they were reading about. Her descriptions were striking, pausing me in my reading to google the concrete details she did present - I had to have a visual. Alma and Jane both write with a more journalistic outlook, however, they differ in the way they approach their subjects. Alma's introductory paragraph was written in first person, establishing a personal foundation of trust - she had been there, she was familiar. Yet, Jane didn't have any ties to her subject. She was merely reporting, and doing so with an impersonal, almost, urgent tone. Even so, it was easy to get drawn into her style without known much on the matter.
